Inquisitive Question

Should illegal downloading be targeted as seriously and severely as the government believes? If a person does not make enough money to be able to allocate a budge for arts & entertainment, (which has been proven to psychologically be a healthy hobby for all humans), are they to blame if they have no choice?

actually i recently did research on this, and it turns out that illegal downloading tends to benefit the artists that are not (yet) that famouse. It works like this: illegal downloading enables an artist to reach a larger public and therefore (even though not all will actually go out and buy the cd if they like the music) can yield more income than they wouldve been able to otherwise.

And as for the big artists — they make money in other areas like advertising & concerts…

I’m sorry but illegal downloading shouldn’t be allowed to happen, as in the file sharing sites and software should be closed. I think this because when it is available so freely i dont think its wrong for people to download it free, i mean why would some people pay when its free here? The fact is though, the less money record companies make eventually the less good music there will be to listen to. Music has become so shallow lately it doesn’t make an impact. I probably made my point all wrong lol but i ramble.

Personally, I LOVE to buy CDs STILL! I have a whole collection of CDs!

I never download music or movies (free or not).

If others want to download illegally, it’s too bad.
And if some want to pay 99 cents for a song online, I think that’s boring lol.

Buy the CD! :)

(Music is very good and healthy, indeed! Except Britney’s. And Jessica Simpson’s. And a few others Lol)

Bush sucks! Blame it on him! I’m definitly too poor to buy cd’s…I’m a college student, that money could go towards food for like a week! When it really boils down to it, the musicians and people associated to them are living in LA driving BMW’s and living in mansions. I have no problem not supporting them a little more by illegally downloading. THey obviously have too much money to be living like that (donate it chiefs…help kids who don’t have homes, you can never donate enough!). And what the hell is that 99 cent download crap? That costs as much as a cd! Lower the prices on downloads and we might buy more and steal less.

I say it should def be illegal. If you couldn’t afford it, you can’t do it. Simple as that. That is how it was before the internet right? What did people in the years leading up to the internet and file sharing? If they didn’t have the money, they wouldn’t go out. Or, they would go out and steal it from the store, where if caught they would be thrown in jail. Same should go for stolen music and movies online. I know I’m broke, and bored sometimes, but I stay home and find something else to do. I don’t steal from anyone.

well, should a recording engineer/mixer who has spent 14 hours a day months and months away at a time for 28 years non-stop, at the expense of his family and everything else, to make the music that he has been driven to make since childhood be suddenly, in a complete collapse of his industry, without a job or means to support his family? everyone in the industry is not fat and happy and driving a bmw. many in this sector of the music industry have had to bail out completely after losing everything post 2001. it was virtually impossible to work for the 2 years of the collapse and certainly will never be the same. we are very lucky, but how awful to work like a madman your whole life to have it snatched away one track at a time in the end. there was a pride and mentorship to this behind the scenes craft that has completely disappeared as production moves into the computer and into the basement and of course to many it is no loss. to us it has been a huge hardship and loss, artistically, financially, emotionally, you name it. i do not defend the major label business model, but people do not realize the loss to those who can not sell a ticket or a tshirt for their performance. the label moguls are crying all the way to the bank with their contract buyouts. the rest of us are left buying our own 401k and heath insurance from whatever work we can scrape together in the aftermath. from the pride and joy of crafting huge records that changed the face of music to absolute fear and hardship, file sharing reduced the work by 2/3rds and reduced the amount paid for the work that is left by 2/3rds. surely if the next 2 years of your income went missing all together, you would be in a mighty pinch.

They act like a lot of the music downloaded illegally isn’t purposely leaked to gage public reaction before they spend the money to continue on a project. They act like certain stars haven’t been known to go over their producer’s head and leak the song to internet and radio because they think public support will force the record label to release a song that originally they deemed unreleasable. They act like this is some heinous and incalled for crime instead of the natural reaction from a public often charged $20 for something that took like 20 cents to package (yes the actual production of the music cost more, but the CD cost next to nothing).
I understnad these people have a right to make money, but picking on the small guy who simply downloads a song, rather than going after those who actually mass produce and distribute the pirated stuff is wrong. Picking on the little guy who has just enough money to live on, instead of cleaning shop in a multi-billion dollar industry to make the distribution of music more attractive and affordable to the masses is wrong.
