After throwing a fit on the 7th floor of Cedars-Sinai, demanding to be released, screaming at the staff, and not laying or sitting still, Britney Spears was released from the hospital.
TMZ reports that she was held on a 5150, which means she is a danger to herself and others. Due to that label, she can only be held for 72 hours against her will.
Sources say the hospital released her without notifying on what’s going on with her custody battle, which will probably be a shock within itself for Britney to hear that Kevin has sole custody until January 14th.
The good news, or is it good news, I don’t know, but the good news so to speak, is that Britney DOES NOT have a substance abuse problem, just a mental one. Many different sources (especially those in Britney’s and K-Fed’s camp) agree that Brit has all the symptoms of a bipolar disorder.

Because the American health system is messed up.
While I agree that the American health care system is a mess, in this case it’s not the health care system, it’s the legal and civil rights afforded to people in California (and other states, of course, though it varies).
Since she was no longer viewed as a danger to herself or others and she agreed to outpatient treatment, they didn’t have a lot of legal grounds to keep her.
I find that very unfortunate, because her history of missing and blowing off important appointments is pretty well established. I have to wonder how seriously she’s going to take her need for medical and psychological intervention.
I hope that’s not the case, but I tend to agree. One source I read claims she has agreed to outpatient treatment, but she’s not exactly known for keeping appointments.
At least the children won’t be exposed to how chaotic her life has become for a while. Unfortunately my roommate works in the mental health field and has told me many times it’s very difficult to hold someone in lockdown against their will, even though they have obvious mental illness, as long as it’s determined they aren’t going to commit suicide or hurt someone else. She did say though that the one thing they can do is make sure the kids aren’t allowed to be with her unless she is willing to get proper help for the mental problem. Difficult situation.

Not true. LOts of mentally ill people are hospitalized and released in this revolving door type of treatment. IT is extremly hard to hospitilize someone against their will. They don’t mean that she’s better, they just mean that for the moment, literally this moment now, they do not have the legal authority to hold her. That doesnt’ mena she isn’t ill. And people with certain types of illness, such as sociopaths, can be very charming and manipulative in order to get out of treatment.

Then you are either in denial or do not fully understand mental illness. Soem people make mistakes, and other people engage in reckless behaviour because their cognitive abilities are impaired due to a mental illness brought about by genetics, drug use, brain damage of some sort. You don’t just decide to screw up your life so completly without there be some underlying cause of it.
There are a lot of contributing factors, but she is pretty clearly mentally ill. I think it is scary to see it on a former star. It is scary to see, period. You heard murmurings about it back when she was in rehab and they started asking if it could be postpartum depression. I don’t think that would go on this long. She is classic bipolar and is only partly responsible for her actions. Chemical imbalance destroys your ability to think or reason. This doesn’t mean her children should be handed over to her or that she is fine; it means she needs to be OUT OF THE MEDIA SPOTLIGHT and in a place where they can diagnose and treat her and get her into a better place mentally. I am surprised she hasn’t tried suicide yet. She seems to want to change, but is unable to figure out how to do it and then just gives up. Those poor little boys of hers….

at one point, i did think maybe it could be post partum, but it never added up because of the increasingly bizarre behavior and decision making prior to having kids. i think it all came to a head and the truth finally started coming out. she had this goal of marrying and having kids and she set about attaining it like it was just another goal to meet and that’s when she fell apart. what she was looking for was a stable family and she wanted a baby, which is completely different from wanting to be a parent.
it’s not an excuse, just an explanation. mentally ill people do not have the same thought processes as “regular” people. what makes sense to them arises from some stew of chemical imbalance and distorted thought processing. it is one thing to feel sympathy for a clearly disturbed young woman; it is another entirely to give her the boys back or allow her to drive or not medicate her. once she’s diagnosed, medicated, and receiving treatment, she is then to be held responsible for her actions with the caveat that she must take her medicine and do what needs to be done for this. she needs help, but her sons need to be SAFE.

My money is still on a spoiled, selfish, self-centered celebrity with the mind of a 14 year old who always got what she wanted and doesn’t know how to get it or what to do in her life now that her former mode of life (constantly working) is gone and her management is too but she’s got adult privileges and a millionaire’s bank account. Mix in a dysfunctional family, all the outside influences you would come across on tour, a pent-up demand to “catch up” on the things she thought she missed as a teen, the fact that much of her previous image she worked so hard to promote was a lie (virgin, didn’t smoke or drink, etc), and then throw in a couple of babies she has no idea how to take care of and doesn’t have the patience or maturity for, all smack-dab in the middle of the moral cesspool which is Hollywood, and it could possibly rise to a level that appears to be mental illness, or at least be equivalent to it in terms of damage and difficulty to repair.

But i read an article an hour ago saying she was going to voluntarily check herself into an undisclosed psych unit. I can’t imagine what it must be like talking to her face to face (as in her father who has always had a rocky relationship with her). Many people have done drugs but they are not drug addicts. No one is denying that she never touched drugs, what I am saying is she was not addicted (i.e needing it 24/7) Secondly, she was admitted to rehab but clearly that is not what she needed. Her family put her into rehab thinking that her problems stemmed from the partying she was doing at the time, but as we see now it was major psychological issues.
That doens’t mean she didn’t need rehab. Rehab often doesn’t work the first time. Clearly though, drugs are her sporadic self treatment for a much larger mental illness. She needs to be hospitalized.

This year she’s only been seen with a stimulant asthma inhaler, Adderall, and Provigil, during the same time she’s drinking a minimum of one gigantic Frap every day while on the meds (each frap has 155 mgs of caffeine, equal to a couple of cups of coffee, and she reportedly drinks 3-4 fraps before shooting a video). Even if she’s got a Dr. Feelgood to get her the prescription and keep it legal, that’s big-time druggie addiction.

I’ve been thinking for awhile now, that she’s not quite as crazy as everyone says. The way she acts makes her look crazy because she is so emotionally immature, but I think something else is at work. She lives an entitled life, and I think she believes it gives her the right to do whatever she wants, whenever she wants, at the expense of everyone around her.

Cedars-Sinai is a respected hospital, and they won’t release anyone who is an IMMEDIATE danger to themselves or others, otherwise they could be held liable for what happens afterward. I’m truly convinced that while she’s clearly got mental issues, it’s exacerbated because her thinking is completely clouded by her supposed “celebrity” status. Because she has surrounded herself with enablers for such a long time that have done nothing but praise her and tell her how wonderful she is, I don’t know if her family and mental health professionals will be able to get through to her that she MUST get help before it’s too late.

She has a choice to make, and it’s hers alone. She has to be the one to make the decision to get healthy for herself and for her children. If she doesn’t make that choice, and soon, I think we’ll all be reading the stories of her demise. There is an element in mental illness where a person makes wring decisions, where they seek attention in the wrong ways, where they cry out for help by going to extremes, where they self destruct, where they make risky decisions and lack impulse control. That is a mental illness. It could ahve been caused by drugs, by brain damage, by genetics, by home environmnet, by fame, or by things we don’t yet understand. The behaviour you are describing is a mental illness. It’s only a question of what type she has.

I used to be quite a fixture on this site, but took a break due to work demands and the fact that britney herself was making her delusional fantards look so bad for defending her that my efforts were no longer necessary. You used to see them say things like “It’s not her fault see flashed her coochie…again” or “she’s a good mother” on here all the time, until she made it impossible for them to do so. Now it appears we have a new generation of “It’s not her fault, she’s bipolar” fantards to deal with….Good lord, did you see the post by Chris that said “buy her music and she’ll be OK when she’s number 1 in sales again”? I really get mad when thinking that there’s idiots like that out there breathing my air.

Being bipolar is not an excuse to behave badly, weirdly or to neglect your kids. I’m bipolar. I hold down a six-figure job at an investment bank. I take my meds. Some of the side effects are brutal; but it’s better than having “episodes” and doing a ton of embarrassing things while in manic mode and continually breaking the hearts of those who care about you. Bitch needs to take responsibility for herself, or if she can’t do it, her family need to get her sectioned for her own good.
The two biggest celebrity trainwrecks of 2007 - Britney and Amy Winehouse are both bipolar and refuse to take their meds. The other well known bipolar celebrity Kurt Cobain committed suicide. There are many other talented people with bipolar disorder who take their meds and don’t act crazy though - the best example I can think of is British actor/comedian and writer Stephen Fry.

Why haven’t reporters demanded answers from Cedars-Sinai hospital as to why it violated Britney’s privacy rights under Federal HIPAA privacy regulations? Dr. Phil, without Britney’s pre-approval, should never have been told her whereabouts or allowed to make contact with her in the Psychiatric Unit of the hospital. She might not be interested in suing he hospital, but from Dr. Phil’s own statements, it appears clear that the hospital violated HIPAA laws. In fact, the hospital’s Compliance/HIPAA Officer should be investigating this violation and heads should roll.
