Body image is something I am very passionate about, and it plagues women (men too, sometimes) all over the world in one way or another. The entertainment and fashion industry certainly don’t help, creating unrealistic ideals of what beauty should be, versus celebrating individuality.
This billboard is displayed all over Milan for fashion week and it features Isabelle Caro, a 27-year old anorexic who weighs just 31 kilos (about 68 lbs).
Caro, a French woman has “suffered from anorexia since she was 13 as the result of a ‘difficult childhood.”
She said,
I’ve hidden myself and covered myself for too long. Now I want to show myself fearlessly, even though I know my body arouses repugnance. I want to recover because I love life and the riches of the universe. I want to show young people how dangerous this illness is.
I admire Isabelle’s strength and bravery, but most importantly I admire that she recognizes her problem and wants to recover, and in the process instill strength in others as well.

Oh my god! I have to admit I gasped when I saw the picture. It does take a helluva lot of strength and bravery to put yourself out there like that. I hope Isabelle recovers and I hope her message sticks with others that have eating disorders.

With that being said, I guess this billboard thing is a good idea. Anorexia is very dangerous.
You clearly know very little about nutrition, eating disorders, actually anything in general. The human body’s ability to withstand constant abuse is remarkable. Not only is it possible for Isabelle Caro to exist, she may survive for years to come.

okay. first of all, Issabella Caro is a real person. She’s even on the insider and CBS. Ther are so many interviews you can look up of her online. Secondly, I’m glad she’s getting better because she can help and be part of a process to helping young girls like me who have gone through anorexia(in my case, bulimia).
Finally, a pic worth posting. Everyone should see this. This is real, when u live in a world of so called “perfection”. I am glad she had the courage to pose and want us to see this. I love that I am a curvy woman. Too many woman r starving to have a job. This is a great reason to stop the madness. Isabelle, I hope u get better and I wish u the best in your challenge. This is so disturbing. I am glad she put herself ou there, but I am still really bothered by this pic. I know it happens all the time, but it just comes as a shock to see how sick women and men can get with this disease. It is very sad, and I hope she gets good help with getting better, or she will die. I can’t beleive she is only 27, she looks 80. So sad. Get some help girl, and get healthy again.

You are so right on the money. Anything that is not a size four is considered fat…really more like a two. And although Britney Spears is more “rounded” than her pre-baby days she isn’t obese. Somebody needs to tell her that her clothes don’t fit her anymore. But she is called flabby and the truth is the average women is probably her weight. I fight bulemia and I know that even my size is too big for me…and everytime I look at an US Weekly I get inspired to lose just five more pounds. I am sure if we all just cared about what really mattered in life we would be alot better off. It’s a vicious cycle. Good post!
well, it’s a huge problem when people taunt nicole richie (whom i can’t stand) for being anorexic (except she swears she’s not- talk about denial) and call someone who looks fine obese. i look at them saying she has flabby arms, huge stomach and while i think her wardrobe needs maybe the tiiiiniest adjustment, she is absolutely not fat or anything like it. calling her obese just shows how hypocritical and pathetic we are as a society, since the other side of the coin is calling angelina jolie, keira knightley, and others of their ilk anorexic. it’s all a bunch of misogynist morons who hate women and judge them endlessly on their looks while chasing after them to make money off photographs.

70 pounds is not even that low a weight for an anorectic,
40 pounds happens.
I am 5′5 and weigh 83 pounds, and have anorexia.
Generally, people think I weigh a good deal less.

I can show you photos of my own to show you that this image is pretty accurate when conveying what anorexia actually looks like.

now that she is on a poster she has fame, money attention and it is due to her DISEASE. It is important to understand that anorexia is a food disorder, and not a choice…
But right now, Isabelle is being interviewed by some journalists obssessed with audience on french tv shows, & because of what??? her PHYSIC and not the fact that she wants to fight anorexia… and because it is topic that makes $$$. I wonder what will happen to her when it won’t make anymore $$.
Anyway, unfortunatelly this young woman is already an icon for the pro-anna and all the other girls who “dream to look like her” being an anorexic when i was young I would have loved to have the opportunity to express my pain to the world as it is way easier to share your experience on a tv set than in our own families. This commercial only focus on the physical impact of this nutrition disorder instead on asking WHY a woman needs to show her 31kg naked body to the world… But after all fashion and “-doll-art” usually are not famous for their depth thinking…
By the way the photographer is famous for shocking, i don t deny he may wanted to do good, but before he should have ask some social workers or psychologist the negative impact it could have on young anorexic boys & girl

un plateau de télé ne remplace pas une famille, c’est avec elle que tu dois combattre tes fantômes, et si ta famille n’est pas l’épicentre de ton mal, alors c’est auprès d’elle que tu trouveras la force et les ressources. Reconnaitre m’as-t-on dit un jour, c’est le début de la guérison. La route sera longue mais patience est notre alliée à toute.
another comment: when i said “Disease”, my aim is not to stigmatised anorectic but just to let people know that being anorexic is not a choice even though most of anorectic start being on dietand then on the slipery rope fall into anorexia.
Anorexia existed way before the ‘america next top model’and the commercial industry…
