Their best year was their first year when it wasn't obvious to the public that the judges are biased. Simon Cowell gets paid by the same company that puts out the winners album, and it's obvious that his comments have nothing to with talent and everything to do with the person being someone that he can market to teenagers. About half of last year's Australian Idol final twelve were songwriters and musicians. They even had a special episode for them to sing their own material playing their instruments of choice - mostly guitar but also one played piano - which lead to other performance nights where they were allowed to play instruments.
