The 77-year old saxophonist who won a lifetime achievement award at the Grammy’s in February collapsed on stage due to a heat stroke during the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennesse.
He was appearing on the final day of the four-day festival, a multi-genre event which had also featured artists such as The Police, the White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand and Lily Allen.
Ornette has a European tour coming up shortly but it is unclear if the collapse will affect it.
