American Idol Finale Posts A Decrease of 6 Million Viewers Compared To Last Year - Why?

The “American Idol” triumph of 17-year-old Jordin Sparks drew nearly 6 million fewer viewers than last year’s finale, in the latest sign that U.S. television’s highest-rated show may have finally hit its peak.

According to a final tally from Nielsen Media Research on Thursday, 30.7 million fans watched as the Arizona teenager was crowned the youngest champion at the end of the sixth installment of Fox network’s amateur singing contest.

I think cheaper text messaging plans (most which come with unlimited txt’s) helped score the record 70+ million votes and the lower viewership is happening most likely because of the growing popularity of online video communities such as Youtube which in soon time will most likely be TV’s biggest rival. People are getting too spoiled with the on-demand stuff. Nevertheless, almost 31 million viewers is an ad sales’ team’s dream at the network!

We have to remember that ratings don’t take into account Tivo or video recordings of the show. I was working and had to tivo and I watched it as soon as I got home. There could have been a LOT of people who did that. We won’t ever really know.

American Idol is still hot…it’ll be just fine!!

It’s been on for years and I’ve never watched one episode. I don’t hear much about anyone on it besides Kelly so I guess I’m not missing much.

When you know it’s fixed, what’s the point in watching? You already know who’s going to get handed the win. When they put Melinda Doolittle off, that was what sealed the deal that American Idol did not want Jordin to have any vocal competiton in the finale, therefore handing her the win on a silver platter. She should be ashamed.

I vowed not to watch this year because Taylor Hicks won last year. I mean come on! Look at his record sales vs. Chris Daughtery!

They need to reevaluate the voting process. Some crazy people call and vote over 200 times! That’s ridculous!

And this year with Sanjaya! It’s a joke. I doubt I will ever watch it again.

I stop watching too, as much as I enjoyed the contest after few seasons it starts to bore.
