Charges of racial bias have hit Oprah Winfrey’s Broadway hit, “The Color Purple.”
Shawnique Hill, the show’s ex-stylist and dresser, charges in a federal lawsuit that she was axed after complaining there were too few “people of color” working behind the scenes. The complaint alleges discrimination, breach of contract and wrongful termination.
The show’s rep said, “We are confident there has been no violation of the law.”

Me too Ruben…me too. When a white man gets wrongfully fired from a job, everyone says “oh, he was just a lazy bum who didn’t do the work properly!!!” and when he says he was WRONGFULLY fired, people tell him to quit whining and buck up. But when it’s someone of minority status, it’s cause they ain’t white. But I was told a LONG time ago, and have sadly found it to be quite accurate, that the people who actually have the FEWEST rights in America are the white heterosexual male. They don’t have ANY numbers to call if something doesn’t go right for them…or in other words, something doesn’t go their way or they are feeling discriminated against, they have one one to stand up and cry for them. Women, blacks, hispanics, gays…they all have alliance groups that are there ready to fight for them. Who fights for the white straight male? NO ONE!! Oprah, as far as I can tell, is as fair and honest a person that there is. I can’t even see this being a legitimate issue, and someone is just wanting something for nothing
You people need to research before you comment. I found the complaint online and its pretty disturbing. Sounds like Oprah Winfrey wasnt aware of the lack of minorities at this show or of this woman being fired. It’s sad that someone can get fired because their black and making “too much money”

Seriously, if there were too few minorities working in this production, don’t you think the cast members would be the first to let us know that? Anyone who has ever lived in Chicago knows that the place is brimming with people from diverse ethnic backgrounds. You just have to be willing to see that ethnic people don’t just come in shades of black or white.
Its unfortunate, but I had other friends who worked at the show and people of color are only employed onstage. Behind the stage is colorless.
Yeah Regina. My friends said the same thing also. I have friends who work on Broadway and the woman who filed this lawsuit is the only black woman on Broadway to have a big contract. I’ve met this stylist Shawnique. Some friends went to a party at her estate in New Jersey. They said she was very nice (very well dresed). She’s wealthy so I dont think a suit like this would be filed for money –something must have happened.
I agree. as a black person I hate it when people of color [the term "minority" is a big lie] use their ethnicity to push and pull their way around. Oprah just built a school in Africa for goodness sake! Thats saying something. That employee needs to take her disgruntled ass on to Wendy’s and get a new job. She should have kept her mouth shut.
