The Motion Picture Association of America has determined that smoking will be a bigger factor in determining a film’s ratings.
Previously, only underage smoking was considered in assigning film ratings but now adult smoking will be taken into account as well.
This decision will place smoking in the same category as sex, violence and offensive language in determining the ratings. Yes, smoking is bad…but do you think it’s serious enough to be in the same category?
The descriptions will come in two terms: “glamorized smoking” or “pervasive smoking.”
Dean of Harvard School of Public Health, Barry Bloom, said,
By placing smoking on a par with considerations of violence and sex, the rating board has acknowledged the public-health dangers to children associated with glamorized images of a toxic and lethal addiction to tobacco.

well the alcoholism and drugs should also be banned. i agree with their decision. i think smoking is bad for you and people experiment with it only because the movies glamorize it.
