“Thank You All For Coming“. Those were the only words and actual “lyrics” that came out of Britney Spears’ following a performance set that hid all talent as well as production value from the woman that used to be the biggest female pop star of the world in the beginning of the 21st century. It gets worse before this even begins - about half the people that were there didn’t even hear her when she said it. She did it as she was exiting the stage.
Whatever happened to “Hi Y’all! How are you San Diego?” or “I’m so happy to be here performing in-front of all of you in this little space, I find it more intimate, more personal, and you’re all the first to experience this with me” and “Thank you so much to all my fans for being here and supporting me!” - Is it that hard Britney? - Nothing.
The feeling of Britney Spears being a fembot, a product on autopilot was still clearly present on that stage, even 3 years after her last show for “The Onyx Hotel” tour which she cancelled in Europe due to her knee.
The set she did was great, she’s a great performer, but, there was absolutely no essence to it. It was short lived, it had no connection with the audience besides the screams everytime she would move her body. Very superficial. She looked beautiful, she’s looking much better, she was clearly enjoying herself, and nobody will ever take that away from her.
Nobody was managing this event. She got on stage 3 hours late, her cousin and security team were running around and it looked very amateur. I saw Allie walk past me at least a dozen times, going back and forth, looking as if she was not sure where she needed to go next.
The entire 12 minute run was lipsynched. It was like, someone pressed play on a stereo that had tracks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. What the heck were they thinking? What was the point of her wearing a side microphone?. Take it back to Toys R’ Us Brit!
Furthermore, while the crowd was waiting for over 3 hours for Britney to get on stage, nobody had the decency to talk to the audience or let them know how long they were going to have to wait. Everything was chaotic, pun intended.
If Britney Spears is doing this with the hopes that it’s going to leave these crowds of people “wanting more” and if she believes this HoB tour is a way to test the waters and warm up, then well, she’s going to have to prove herself to her audiences much, much more than she currently imagines. This is not 2001 anymore, she’s not who she used to be.
I wish her the best of luck of course, and trust me, there is nothing more that I wanted but to come home and write and awesome review of Britney’s 1 hour show that included at least two new tracks as well as full versions of her old hits through the performances instead of sped up quickies.
Wait….that’s right, forget the hour….it lasted for 12 minutes. Some people paid $500 for these tickets. That’s roughly $40/minute to watch Britney lipsynch. :/
I know her biggest die hard fans will be OK with anything they get, especially the gay Britney fanbase, who represented itself through Raul Florez, 22, who responded to other people’s complaints last night outside the HoB and told the AP : “Whatever, we love her, she’s totally amazing”.
On the other hand, it is the general audiences that are going to make a huge difference in how many albums Britney Spears will one day be able to sell, and that will be a totally different story.

It wasn’t even promoted so it really doesn’t matter. This wasn’t a big event like her official world tour or something. This is just a treat so Ruben get a fucking life and get over Britney! Fag! You already turned ur back on her so you lost the Britney team. You are so dumb ha ha. You were so close to working with Britney’s crew. You will eventually regret it once you see her new stuff come up. Anyway get over her. People still love the girl. She is a legend!
Concert? Since when does lip-syncing rate as a concert? Britney Spears - or more accurately, the fact that there are FANS of Britney Spears - is the best indication that anyone outside of the United States needs to verify the fact that they should feel justified in committing terrorist acts INSIDE the United States.
Anyone that pays money or waits around to see this former Mouseketeer shake her ass on stage is a lamb headed to slaughter who eats, drinks, watches and listens to whatever someone they think is cooler than they are tells them to.
Start diversifying your tastes, lemmings. Britney isn’t an artist; she’s a spokesmodel.

Ruben..this is Cameron and i couldn’t agree with you more! i’m so glad i didn’t spend $400 on plane tickets and get those tickets from you… everyone is saying that Britney did amazing etc… i’ve seen britney coutless times and that was nothing compared to what we know as Britney Spears… she’s been “working her ass off” at the millenium and that’s it… she didn’t give off any of the star quality that she has or once had. She really needs to get it together… A for Effort but not even a C- for what happened… hopefully the next 3 shows will be better but i’m not going to make excuses for her!

I agree with everything you said. However, in her defense, this was not supposed to be a concert. It was supposed to be a secret perfomence, which could either be one song or ten songs. Those expecting to get a full out Britney show for $50 (originakl ticket price) are crazy.
I don’t agree with everything Ruben says but I believe this review 99%. In between writing an assignment I’ve been reading comments by tons of people who either attended the concert or knew of someone who did and the reviews in general were bad including from her fans who tried to soften their comments by saying she looked great and that they love her no matter what. That’s good and all but when you take away all of that and look at the show itself it does sound very put together at the last minute and amateur. If she wants to make a comeback she better hire a manager stat or go back to Larry Rudolph and beg him to help her do a better job at the future HoB concerts.
One should never pay for anything without knowing what they are paying for. So I guess the disappointed people have only their expectations to blame for letting them down.

HAHA You guys are so pathetic!! First of all TICKETS WERE ONLY 35dollars..if you paid more…then you must of gotten them at ebay or a different web. Second of all for the fucking 846545165498465241654984651 time..this was never CONFIRMED by her/her people!!!!! So you bougth tickets without even knowing for sure. Ruben confirmed shit and called it official when he really didn’t know ANYTHING..I mean he said she would perform new songs.. DID SHE? no..mkkkay. DOES The M+M’s sound LIKE BRITNEY TO YOU? NO…ok. I agree with your review, Ruben. Thank you so much for saying it. I am angered because when I defend Britney [the human] I get called delusional or something. Im a very huge Britney fan…and it hurts me when people attack Britney the person. Shes not a slut…a whore…a bad mother…or anything. Saying such things is an insult to her as a woman and since I have a mother and a sister I cannot see anyone calling my mom or sister that.
But Britney as a popstar? Youre right. Im praying that this isnt the best she can get. She definately needs work. Popstars need costume designers, sound guys…pyrotechnic people…promotion people….she got Roberto Carvalli [spellcheck] to design some of her Onyx Hotel get-up…and youre also right about the Onxy Hotel Tour. she wasnt happy…and she DIDNT want to do that tour [for reasons she hasnt yet revealed] and so she lost her connection with the fans.
Time will tell where Britney really is in her career. I’ll support her until I cannot any more, and I pray that day doesnt come.

Britney has had a lot going on in her life and this was a big step to get back on track. This was the first show in 3 years and good or bad it was great seeing her do what she is suppose to be doing. I only paid $35 and I AGREE WITH RUBEN. It’s nice to be diehard Britney fans but that was an HONEST and TRUTHFUL REVIEW. I didn’t expect an hour - but I did expect NEW songs and I DID expect her to get on that damn stage with in a reasonable amount of time. It was RIDICULOUS. OH and I was hoping she wouldn’t LYPSINC but I KNEW she would. Honestly, SHE CAN’T compete in todays market without singing live and she CAN’T SING PEOPLE. This totally sucked. Geez Dude…these were not supposed to be full concerts. Never anywhere was it promoted as such. Obviously these are just meant to get her back out there. They aren’t even booked under “Britney Spears” but under “M+M”. Yes, it could’ve been longer than a quarter of an hour, that would’ve been great, but it’s highly possibly that she’s just not ready yet for any extended performance. It has been well over 3 years since she last toured and she’s only been out of rehab for a little more than a month and half. Quit acting like you’re the know all on entertaiment. Hey I wasn’t at the gig, but it sounds like while it was fun to see her live etc…..waiting for 3 hours for her to perform for 15mins seems a bit much. Also most performers always address the crowd when they get on stage it is a matter of courtesy after everyone going out to see her live….Ruben has a right to his own opinion and I always found he gives a good unbiased review on his site…

Wow. I can’t believe these photos. She is just a wreck. The “surprise” concert last night was overall a huge disappointment to fans no matter what these fanatics say and now this??? When will she learn that taking off her clothes doesn’t mean that everyone will fall in love with her again? Once again instead of going to playboy she produces cheap, slutty photos of her nude. Insane…these prove the girl is not better and isn’t ready for a full comeback.
I don’t think she could have danced the may she did most of the time if she had sang with just music, she didn’t want to slip up on the first night, or this special “tour”. Most of the people there appeared to be having a blast, its about the feelings you feel in there not what you think about it. It’s called being entertained. The fact she just did old songs is proof that this isn’t to “leave the fans wanting more” it’s to get back into the game. Footballers don’t play an important game without warming up, this is what Britney is probably doing.
Sure Britney could have done more for the crowd, but she didn’t know how they was gonna react, after all the bad press against her she will have been so nervous. Plus Britney was trying to keep it secret, even going by a different name, so the fans that were there were supposed to have had no idea about it, however that being said she is Britney, nothing can be a secret with her.

I think that the show was to prove she was still alive and wanting to perform. It wasn’t ment to be a huge spectacular with laser beams and smoke and the show shi-bang. Maybe she isn’t ready to be the Britney that she once was. She still needs time to get into her full game. This mini-tour are just club type appearences. Does it matter if she lip-synched? I believe the majority of artists do, and she always has, so there really shouldn’t be any shock.
I believe that Ruben needs to stop being so critical of her. Yeah, he keeps saying “I WANT TO SEE HER SUCCEED” and blah blah..but that doesn’t mean anything. Sounds as if he has some sort of resentment of Britney.
At least she put effort into making a little appearence. She obviously didn’t have to perform for anyone if she didnt want too. She might have thought it would be nice to pop up somewhere and show that she still wants to perform and is trying to regain her thrown. I get her A+ for putting on a show and getting ready to start her comeback.
I’m not an obsessed fan, but I am a fan. I see some of the unfortunate mistakes she makes and I’m not naive about them. I think to myself “Britney, why did u do that?!?”…Everyone makes crappy choices in their life. Some just do more than others. She’s a human being and isn’t afraid to be normal, which is totally respectful. She will be within the next year, the “BRITNEY” that she was 6-7 years ago…Give the girl time.

I totally agree with adam’s comment. I love watching tennis and all players say that they step up match by match. It is humanly and logically impossible to show your best tennis from the beginning of the tournament. I did folklore dancing and can tell you that it is not less intensive than sports.

Everyone seems to hate the fact you dont deserve to have such conexion with her managment and then coming here and saying negative things about her. if you continue like this you`ll be left alone with your 30-40% visitors.

I don’t think Ruben should fake anything. I admit that there are time when I think he is inappropriate and I tell him in my comments. It’s usually not because he targets a specific person but because he’ll make a comment about someone being fat or not pretty enough…whatever. But this is his blog. He keeps it real. I wouldn’t want to read something from someone who wasn’t genuine about his or her feelings about something - especially if they are reviewing a concert or movie they attended. If you don’t like what he says about Britney then go back to worldofbritney or breatheheavy. You come back because you know Ruben is going to give you truthful opinions on things. If he didn’t I doubt you would come back at all.
Out of curiosity I decided to read all of these posts, and I am so blown away at the lack of mental capacity of these fans of BS. First, there’s the person that has to say f^^k in every sentence, then there are those who come off as intelligent, but there are at least 5 spelling errors in their post, and lastly everyone defending this poor girl doesn’t realize that they are the ones that put her in rehab in the first place. I remember a proper little Britney Spears many years ago saying that she didn’t believe in sex before marriage. It’s just funny to me to see how people are so wrapped up in all this. You want to see her successful?? It’s like saying to a guy who defuses bombs.. Hey, you just keep going out there and defusing those bombs, we want you to be successful! Hey, there’s a bomb over there now, go get it! When all the while there’s this sick desire to see him get popped and be “lucky” enough to watch it happen. You people.
Well, it is obvious that someone used Microsoft Word to make sure their sentences came out as competent as they could, so that way Nab can actually sound intelligent. Nab, in your sentence you stated “…but there are at least 5 spelling errors in their post…” Being the intellectual that you are, you should be aware of the fact that ARE is present tense. The fans messages have already been posted, so you needed to use past tense, which would have been WERE. Also in the sentence “…to a guy who defuses bombs..” ; there was an extra dot missing. That extra dot would indicate an ellipses. When your grammar skills are up to par, then all the power to you to be critical of other’s mishaps. Good day.

Eric, as far as I can tell these posts ARE still on this comment strip, and they ARE with spelling errors. They may have written them in the past, but they still exist here for us to see so I can’t say there WERE at least 5 spelling errors because they are still here - in the present. uhmm, i must say that of course i would love to see her sing live and all that stuff,and of course this is not 2001 and she has a lot of homework to do b4 her “official comeback”, cuz what i saw in the videos was nothing great and i didnt expect something great either cuz b4 the show began people mag announced that there were only going to be 4 old songs in about a 20 min performance, the price ticket is $35 so who the fuck in their right mind would paid 500???this was going to be like that mtv special “britney in the zone and out all night” so 4 those who were expecting an hour concert, nobody to blame but u.
but its interesting how that short video about her performance last night is the number one video on youtube in about 10 hours.

nab, there are many britney dislikers who mispell and use curse words…no need to single people out. and same with you ruben…dont single out fans as being young and or gay. thats uncalled for. there are many fans who are very diverse and would take offense by that statement. last…britney rocked her fans loved that she took the time to show(even though there were many who stated differently) and she took the time to thank everyone. shes a strong girl to perform after the nonsense we read daily about her. and if i mispelled anything i am sorry…nobody is perfect.
It’s good to see Britney getting back into the mix of things. I guess it would have been nice to hear some type of new material, but then again, this wasn’t some extravagent event. Also, regardless of the fact that yes, lipsynching is Brit’s trademark, it’d be nice to see her try and step it up. Change it up a bit. I don’t know. That’s just my opinion. You don’t have to agree with it. But, when you’ve got all these powerhouse voices out there who can go on stage, bounce around, and still sound pretty damn good.. I don’t know.
In any case, for just coming back after 2-3 years, not bad.

Stop kidding yourselves. You needed Brit to come back and do something so awesome that you could wipe people’s noses in it. That Brit could make fans of her non-fans, that she could win back old fans, so that she could win back media support. That didn’t happen. She’s been down so long, she desperatly needed a touch down. Nope, same ol’ crappy Britney, different day.
She produced that herself, and just like everything she produces, it was cheap, it was amateur, and it fell flat…and it seems to be without the approval, and obviously without the $$$$$ kicked in from Jive. If that doesn’t say she’s a talentless, loose cannon, then I don’t know what else does.
This was a Britney Spears concert. There are no M&M’s except maybe her back up dancers. They are called back up for a reason. To say that it was an M&M’s concert is like saying that the harajuku girls threw a concert, and Gwen Stefani just happened to show up. People it doesn’t work that way.
Britney needs to create controvercy, “The did she or didn’t she?” or “Will she or won’t she” factor in order to get your attention. She uses that to whip you guys into a frenzy, as you are so EASILY WHIPPED, and time and time again she fools you into thinking that something BIG is just around the corner. It keeps you hanging on. It gets you to tune in, buy her albums, and buy $500 tickets. Then she goes out there, half-asses something, because she knows that she doesn’t even have to try anymore to keep you hooked, and more than that, she doesn’t even care anymore. You are all inintially depressed and disappointed, but right away, you all go into dammage control to save a woman who didn’t care about you enough to give you your money’s worth. “Well it’s no big deal that her movie did horrible because…..” “It’s no big deal the album did horrible because…..” “It’s no big deal that she put on a crappy performance because….”
It wasn’t just “no big deal” yesterday. It wasn’t just “no big deal” that had you all chomping at the bit, foaming at the mouth, tuned in to your blogs, and paying $500 for a band you never heard of. If it wasn’t a big deal to you, then you wouldn’t do those things. You just ask us to think it’s not now, because you are all rotten losers. Britney used you and laughed all the way to the bank.
This was supposed to be her “big comeback” or at least the prelude, her rehearsal for her “big comeback”. Gee, what does she have planned next, more writhing around in underwear, more stripper like behavior, more songs so horrible that Jive refused to release them officially? That’s not a come-back. That’s a washed up, frightened little girl who doesn’t know how to live a normal life outside of the spotlight trying to hold on to fifteen minutes and pump your wallets for every last cent.
She had three years, several producers, and several writers, Jive supposedly backing her, and all the supposed “talent” and supposed “riches” in her own bank account to put together a decent show for you guys.
The American school system begins the last week of August, or the first week of September. By December, just about every public school in America has a children’s choir performance for Christmas. These children perform live, often dance or have other skits, and they sing from anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour. And they put on a quality show that is lightyears better than what your “pop queen” gave to you last night.
Don’t you get it? She doesn’t care anymore. She puts on a bra, and calls it a costume. She gives a guy a lap dance and calls it a performance. If she had genuine talent, if she had an original bone in her body, and if she really cared about her music or her fans, then she would not settle for such cheap, and sleazy tactics. And it’s really sad that you guys are willing to settle for mediocrity either because you don’t know the difference, or because you are so filled with nostalgia that you will watch your idol flush her life and career down the toilet and still think it’s all part of the act.
Your incomptence completely bothers me. Please read Thomas Paine’s pamphlet, “Common Sense”, and learn a thing or two. That’s all.
Brava, Kelly! This is the best and most articulate post I have read regarding Britney. I believe it is an accurate assessment of what Britney is doing to her fans. Unfortunately, the people that need to read it won’t because they are so blinded by their love of Britney to see her for what she really is - which is everything in your post.
Ruben, I think your criticism about Britney’s show is fair. But my question is: Why are you just now criticizing the fact that she lip syncs?
