Salma Hayek Contributes More Than 2 Cents In May’s Marie Claire

salma.jpg

Salma Hayek spoke out Marie Claire’s May issue about expecting her first child at age 40 – and she believes that women should not feel rushed to have children until they feel ready.

Motherhood is not for everyone. It is for me, but there’s no reason women should feel rushed to have a child. Society thinks if you don’t have children, you’ve failed as a woman, even if you are CEO of a company. You’ve got to be beautiful, smart, skinny, tall, rich, successful at your job, married to the right guy – and have genius children. And by the way, you also have to be a nun!

On top of enjoying motherhood this year, she is also the executive producer of one of the year’s biggest hits, ABC’s Ugly Betty. In showbiz, persistance is key.

Everybody thinks I’ve got a new job, but I’ve been trying to get shows on the air for years. The secret is never giving up.

The demands to maintain a perfect physical appearance in the industry are intense, but she is determined to challenge people’s ideas about women – especially Latin women.

The stress [of appearing physically perfect] is sensational. But then, you have to keep everything in perspective. It’s a dress, hair, makeup – c’mon, let’s go! We have to stop this obsession that starts when we’re teenagers: ‘Am I pretty enough?’ I started out in Hollywood at the same time as Jennifer Lopez. Before us, Latinas only had roles that were part of the backdrop, as the maid or the prostitute. We changed that. Of course, you’re always looking for those Meryl Streep parts, but I am grateful for the things I did.

Are you listening, Ruben?

I love that you called Ruben on this. He’s probably one of the most superficial people I’ve ever come across.

Thanks. I think that’s what makes Ugly Betty such a great show right now. It’s my #1 new show to watch and America Ferrara along with the rest of the cast do an excellent job. The storyline is great and it really does teach us that beauty is skin deep and it uses every character as an example of that, not just Betty. All of the characters have such depth and are multi-dimensional that viewers can understand what the real definition of ugly vs. beauty is without it being cliche. I really give kudos to Hayek for not following the norm and helping create this fabulous show and giving to various charities. I’m sure if she took people who criticized her for her weight, height, and ethnicty there were more voluptuous women with brains in Hollywood over the skinny bimbos who are considered beautiful but people like Ruben and much of our society but could care less about contributing their time, power and wealth to worthy causes - now that’s ugly!

I was reading that article in marie claire yesterday waiting to get my nails done, and to be honest i’ve never given a thought to her before, but she blew me away. ive never really thought to myself “i want to be like so and so” and stuff, but she’s definitely a role model for me now. very inspiring.

Sorry. Part of my above comment was cut out so it didn’t make sense towards the end:

I really like Salma. She is not like the others celebrities who just get money because they’re good-looking. By the way, Ugly Betty is really good!

Are you kidding? Salma Hayek is no sweet babe in the woods. She drops and adds men like her underwear. She dated Ed Norton just so she could get Frida made. That guy wrote the thing, got the money, got Miramax to make it, and what did he get? She dumped him right after she lost at the Academy Awards.

And while she was dating Ed, she went off to St. Tropez with a rich Arab guy who paid her for the weekend. Can you guess what they did all weekend?
