For the US: the chicken comment is offensive b/c it plays on black stereotypes. And yes, black stereotypes are a lot more offensive than white stereotypes, b/c black stereotypes helped justify slavery, lack of access to education, and bars to political participation, like voting, or land ownership. It’s understandable that some people may point out that black can poke fun at white stereotypes but not vice-versa, but, as I wrote, it’s the whites’ use of black stereotypes that historically has been very dangerous. That doesn’t excuse any racism by any group, though.

What NO ONE should be disputing, though, is how offensive the caption is of JHud “talking.” That, right there, is nothing but pure racism. No one can write it off as an innocent caption poking fun of someone being stupid, b/c the ridiculously misspelled words and the mention of chicken makes it clear that it’s geared for black persons.

I’m pretty astonished that this posting is still up. Carolina, you’re not from the United States, and that’s obvious. You have zero cultural savvy or sensitivity to us.

And I suggest everyone here do something about this. Forward this posting to the more successful, legitimate pop culture sites. It may buy this site publicity, but it will also bring them a ton of criticism. Or, send it to this site’s sponsors. Or to news organizations. Do it anonymously, if you’d like. It’s easy to not understand the racial implication behind this post. This post is wrong for many reasons. First, what is the purpose of stating that Jennifer is eating chicken? Had it been a white celebrity eating chicken, we would never have heard about it. And it’s not even the fact that she’s eating chicken, it’s the commentary that was placed with it. THAT is the part that was ignorant. THAT was the part that was offensive.

And it’s typical of a person that is not African American to state that they have Black friends and make jokes that could be considered racial around them all the time. Having black friends does not mean that you’re not racist. And just because it is ok with THEM for you to make those remarks doesn’t mean that it’s ok with the rest of the Black population for you to make those comments. What you have to understand is that there are certain cultural norms, that, while ok for blacks to use with each other, are not ok for other races to use with blacks. It has been our way of finding the humor with the painful situations that we have experienced at the hands of others. So, while black people may pick on other black people for certain things, it is not ok for outsiders to act in the same manner.

Even though I don’t believe you meant to offend anybody by your original comments, or your apology, what you did was still extremely offensive. What makes it sad is that you did it w/o understanding how it would be offensive. It’s something that happens quite a bit, becuase racism is becoming more and more covert. It’s not that people are always looking for racism; it is just there. And it’s not just against blacks; all races experience racism. Ignoring it will not make it go away, and it was ignorant to even suggest that (to the person that said we were looking for it). We’re also not hung up on slavery (for the person that stated that). Yes, this all started with slavery, but the pain is a constant. The pain has nothing to do with slavery now and everything to do with not being accepted because of the color of my skin. It has to do with being doubted because I’m black. It has to do with people telling me that they’re store doesn’t have a lay-a-way plan, when I have more than enough to buy what I want. I can’t even begin to list it all. THAT is what is painful. I’m not hanging on to slavery. It is a part of my history, yes, but it does not define who I am. I’m not looking for a handout. I don’t want somebody to give me a job because I’m black. I want a job because of my own merits, because of the fact that I’m educated and a hard worker. There are many blacks out there of this same mindset.

It’s ignorant to think that we’re all looking for a handout or that we’re hanging on to slavery as an excuse to hate whites and to not do better for ourselves. Keep in mind that the majority of the people posting in here have had very limited experiences with blacks, as is evidenced by the comments posted. And the media does not provide an accurate portrayal, either, because that doesn’t bring in viewers.

The way to stop racism is to educate yourself and do what you can to end your own actions. That means being more aware of and dealing with your own biases, even when you think you don’t have any.
