I am a woman and am outraged that someone would use such disgusting and sexist language against young women. It is a good thing when we as a society say that discrimination should not be rewarded. There are very good reasons why we shouldn’t approve of public figures making openly racist remarks, especially when there is such a painful (and continuing) history behind it. I am a student at Rutgers University, where the girls who Imus insulted were from. I happen to be friends with a few of the girls on the team and they were so very offended and devastated by his words. Imagine if you were at a basketball championship, trying your hardest to win, and some ignorant, pathetic excuse for a human being called you a “nappy headed ho.”

If Imus should be fired, then Isiah Washington (for his “faggot” comments)should be removed from Grey’s Anatomy, Paris Hilton’s “The Simple(ton) Life” should be removed from E! for her racist comments (calling blakc people “niggers”), and Rosie O Donnell should be fired from The View for her racist comments about Asians. The thing is, that team is not made up of all black females. There are white females on the team. Had he made a comment that could be viewed as an insult to the entire team, maybe things would have played out differently. I feel that there are a lot of times when Blacks and other “minorities” make comments about Whites that nobody does anything about. It’s utterly ridiculous. The point that I will make is that Black people, when faced with racism, do something about it, and White people don’t. So, if you want to take legal action and fight to end racism against White people, do something about it. Don’t just complain about it to your friends or get on blogs and type out your frustrations. In an interview with Fatman Scoop after all this blew up, it was asked why it is a problem for Imus to make that comment but not for all the rappers to do it in their music. He has a point. It’s not right in ANY situation. What I will say is that in the hip-hop culture, not all women are referred to as hos and bitches; these terms are referred to women that are considered nasty, that sleep around, that are disrespectful, that basically don’t act in a manner suitable to a woman. We all have words to describe these women. At the same time, there are appropriate terms for the women that they do respect and do think highly of, such as queen, dime, mammi, etc. If you listen to the music, you’ll hear and begin to understand the difference. Imus was wrong, because he grouped and labeled a group of women without knowing anything about them. Rappers don’t do this; they write from their experiences. You ask them, and they can tell you what group of people their lyrics are aimed at.

Beyond that, rappers are not the only people using these negative terms. I will give you that it’s predominant in the rap culture, but rappers definitely are not the only ones using it. Check the sales and do some research. Rappers primary audiences are white americans. That’s where their money largely comes from. As much as other cultures want to complain about the rap culture, why am I constantly seeing Whites/Asians/Latinos emulating it? It is not just the rappers that smoke weed, that tote guns, that smack asses.
