Sanjaya Malakar Is Defying The Grounds of Which American Idol Is Built On

sanyaya.jpgsimonthumbsdown.jpg

Has America gone insane? Season six for American Idol has caused us to ask some fundamental questions about the reality television phenomenon. Show judge Simon Cowell repeatedly chides contestants, “This is a singing competition.” But is it really? When talented singers such as Gina Glocksen are voted off in favor of a tone-deaf Sanjaya Malakar, with his trainwreck performances, the question is whether Idol is really a singing competition, or something altogether different.

Although Sanjaya was only in the middle of the pack for last week’s vote (tabulated by phone calls and text messages for the week ending Mar. 31, 2007), on the Web he was the most searched for Idol contestant of the season, garnering more than twice the volume of searches than his nearest rival (not counting the continuing quests for racy photos of Antonella Barba, who is no longer in the competition).

The Sanjaya phenomenon, while amusing, highlights the biggest challenge to reality shows that depend on a public vote for show outcome. It’s not a singing contest, or even a popularity contest; it’s become a race to see who can make the biggest spectacle. In that context, Sanjaya has the advantage.

I think it’s funny.

American Idol was only good and fun for me during the first 2 seasons.

All I can say is that my friends and all our dialing computers are going to be voting for Sanjaya right thru the finals.

Thank you Howard Stern for keeping us on the right path

If Sanjaya had any decency, he would quit. This would show all the people out there that ruining things for others is wrong.

-I rally don’t like American Idol, never watch it, but it is the right thing to do, which is all that matters.

I agree with josH. While it may seem like fun and games to put someone unworthy of the fame and fortune at the top, it is wrong.

Gina G. wanted this chance, just like the others who are serious about this chance to follow their hearts desire in a career as a singer. But all of them are being ’slaughtered’ by Sanjaya’s lack of depth to see what he is doing to them. It is utter selfish stupidity—and those voting for him are no better.

Hey, ruin the show, I don’t really care. But I can’t help but wonder what the other contestants are thinking having to deal with this crap.

Lighten up Folks!!!
Sanjaya stepping down would be an cowardly and ignominious act!
The old saw is not to look a gift horse in the mouth.

I for one am happy for his success and that of his busty babelicious sister!
Sanjaya is still in the competition bc he doesn’t take himself that seriously.
Remember how Chris sneered at Sanjaya after the second week when Stephanie was booted? You could almost tell what he was thinking - like WTF are U still doing here dude?!?
I knew then and there he’d be next to get shafted.

ROCK ON SANJAYA

Sanjaya rocks! He is his own man. I have heard him sing in real life and the boy can sing so he will do fine in the studio. If you don’t like him, then don’t vote for him. I like him so I will continue to vote for him. Some of the best entertainers have less than perfect voices - Boy Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Neil Diamond, Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks, the list is endless.

I am sad to see Gina go and had hoped that the Radio Shack salesman (Chris R.) or the naked mole rat (Phil Stacy) would have gotten the boot.

The name of the show states quite clearly that it is a search for the next ‘Idol’. Sane adults don’t idolize anyone. Young teenagers, on the other hand, do. It is, therefore, logical that the kid is doing so well . He is , after all, following in the footsteps of previous generation’s teen idols ( Leif Garrett, Pat Boone, Bay City Rollers, The Monkeys, etc.) None of them could sing particularly well, but all of them melted young tweenies’ hearts with their looks and charm.

Should he win, I’d wager a couple of C notes that he would outsell the previous winner (the grey haired chap) in no time flat.

There are a hundred reasons why people like the author Ruben don’t like Sanjaya (he’s too young, he’s too non-white, he’s too non-black, he’s too boyish, he’s too skinny, he’s too happy, he’s too threatening to Ruben and other people who have issues with any of the above, etc. etc.), but the one thing I can’t figure out is the tone-deaf part. That is just not right. He is always on key, he has a melodious voice, he captures the rhythms. Why are people hearing different things? Don’t try telling me I’M tone deaf. I’ve sung my entire life in choirs, a capella groups, and the like. I’m not a professional, but neither are most people watching AI. This idea that Sanjaya got started, and people just won’t let it go. It becomes an easy target. In the meantime, the real reasons some people are so offended lie elsewhere (see above). Get off the bandwagon! Sanjaya’s got a very good voice that’ll get better with age and coaching.

What people don’t get, is that while the Melinda and Lakisha have vocal chops, they lack charisma and X factor and what Sanjaya lacks in vocal skills he more than makes up in charisma and star power, with a huge X factor.. But, you will say, it is supposed to be a singing competition,… whatever, if you find a star you find a star, he can carry a tune, probably better than any Ashlee Simpson. Britney Spears, or any of the other pop stars who can’t even sing live. Would people really scream for Lakisha at a concert, or even Melinda. No, all we would do is really clap loudly and appreciatively for their good voices and a job really well done. Do you think they will sell magazines if you put them on a cover of a magazine?. Put Sanjaya on a teen magazine cover and a hair shampoo advertisement and all the countless marketing opportunities he will have and a STAR IS BORN. Never mined the fact that there is no one of his demographic that famous in America and the sky is the limit. By far he is the most marketable contestant in the show.

Sanjaya is cute, but his singing just plain stinks compared to the rest.

For all you Sanjaya supporters, should he win, I hope you will continue to support him by buying his CD’s, going to his concerts, etc. And to Howard Stern, maybe you should cough up for his recording time since you got this stupid thing going..what? did you mic just go silent, I thought so.

Sanjaya has sex appeal. He has ‘it’, the ‘X’ factor that starts like Brad Pitt, Leonardio Di Caprio, and George Clooney have. It’s that easy-going, I-love-the-world (instead of myself) sort of deal. Thus his appeal. I hope he wins. He certainly has more magnetism and star quality than the other contestants despite their singing voices.

Sanjaya has sex appeal? Are you kidding me? He is a good singer? He can carry a tune? Are you kidding me? What is wrong with you people? I just don’t understand how someone can say he is good. Do any of you WATCH the show? He is HORRIBLE, TERRIBLE, AWFUL AND JUST NOT FUN TO WATCH. I actually have to either mute the tv or change the channel when he is on, he is horrible! Compare him to the other singers on the show, he has no chance. He is really funny looking also. He has NO SEX APPEAL. NONE. I feel bad because I think they put him on the show for ratings only, he is not talented. His sister was, but him, yeah, no. Not at all. If he wins, the show will be a total joke, and the people who acutally watched it to find a good SINGER, will no longer watch.

If anyone ever though Idol was ever a singing competition, they’re terribly mistaken. It’s all just a big popularity contest. After the hype of the first single, most ‘Idol’s’ don’t even have the staying power. I think Kelly’s the only Idol that’s ever really been a star and outgrown that whole ‘manufactured popstar’ label.

Idol is a complete waste of time. I know I certainly wouldn’t want to be associated with such a show if I could sing. It’s totally taking advantage of the music industry and bombarding us with useless music while there are real talented people out there working their butts off for record deals and never get them.

“If Sanjaya had any decency he’d quit”? And then vote for the worst would just pick someone new.. And then they should quit, right? Where do these idiots come from? Also , v4tw has no control over the situation anyway. It’s nothing more than a publicity stunt where they fail 95% of the time.. Actually 100% of the time. Except they claim victory when ever someone just happens to stay longer. Sanjaya is a natural attention getter. He was popular on search engines BEFORE v4tw and Stern. So he’s staying because of that. Not because he’s the best singer, but because he’s popular. Now that he’s staying, v4tw and Stern takes credit for what they haven’t done. That’s lame! Also they totally failed to keep Antonella in even though she posed nude! v4tw is worthless.

p.s. if you want to read a good explanation about why v4tw is worthless go here:
